Microsoft Windows XP is a solid operating system but could certainly use some regular
maintenance to ensure that you are achieving the best performance you can from your
computer system. If you are unhappy with the performance of your machine with this
operating system or your performance seems to be degrading more and more over time,
then take a look at these simply and easy to implement tips to improve the performance
of your Windows XP system.
- Optimize the Visual Settings: Windows XP offers many visual effects to make your
operating system “pretty.” However, these bells and whistles can be performance
hogs, especially if your machine barely meets the minimum requirements for XP, and
the cause of unnecessary system stalls or crashes. You can either disable visual
effects one by one or have Windows optimize for best performance using the following
steps:
- Click the “Start” button, then click “Control Panel.” Ensure that you have the Control
Panel set to category view. If in Classic View, select Switch to Category View in
the left top corner of the screen. Select “Performance and Maintenance” and then
click “Adjust Visual Effects.”
- Select the radio button to have Windows “Adjust for best performance.” Or, if you’d
like to adjust the visual effects individually, select the radio button for “Custom”
and choose which visual effects to keep active. I recommend disabling “show shadows
under menus” and “show windows contents while dragging” at a minimum. Play with
the options as needed for your best performance results.
- Finally, click “Apply” then “OK” and you are done.
After completing these steps, you should experience an increase in overall Windows
performance.
- Keep Windows XP Clean: There are several things you can do to drastically increase
the overall performance of your computer system just by cleaning out the “cobwebs,”
such as uninstalling un-needed programs and registry cleaning. The regular cleaning
of Windows XP is necessary to keep your machine operating at optimal performance.
